This study aims to respond to recent calls for a better understanding of the effects of management control systems (MCS) in small start-ups. Using a sample of businessincubated firms, we examine the performance effects of the alignment between MCS and innovation strategy, extending findings previously reported in the management control literature. Results from regression analyses suggest that, contrary to existing management control literature, higher performance is observed in either firm following exploratory strategies and emphasizing financial MCS or firms following exploitative strategies and emphasizing non-financial MCS. Overall, this study contributes to understanding the contingent effects of MCS and innovation strategies in business-incubated firms, as well as the consequences for their outcome and survival.
